The Atlantic corridor: a strategic route linking cities in four European countries.
It connects four countries and many cities, from Lisbon in Portugal to Manheim in Germany, passing through cities like Vigo, Coruña, Gijón, Málaga, Burgos, Bilbao, Bordeaux, Orléans, Paris, Nantes, LeHavre, Strasbourg, Saarbrucken and more.
The route is more than 6,200 kilometres long. It is a unique opportunity for companies, especially freight forwarders, who want to extend their reach in Europe.
This corridor is directly linked to the Rhine-Alps corridor and the North Sea Mediterranean corridor, the Rhine-Danube corridor as the Atlantic corridor ends in the centre of Europe. On the Iberian peninsula, it also shares a route with the Mediterranean corridor.
In terms of freight transport, the Atlantic corridor is constantly growing.
Although the Atlantic Corridor is not as developed as its Mediterranean counterpart, which is more than 7,000 km long and widely used for freight transport, this Atlantic route with great poten1al is growing rapidly. Major investment and development projects are underway to improve its infrastructure and increase its use for freight transport.
In Spain, the development of the Atlantic Corridor includes the connection to a 1435 millimetre standard gauge track at the Jundiz terminal, 8 kilometres from Vitoria Gasteiz.
This modernisation of the terminal is good news for a city with a strong economy and an excellent geographical location, which will now be connected to the European rail network.
From Jundiz, freight traffic will be distributed to the north-west and centre of the Iberian Peninsula. This will make it a key point in the freight transport network in Spain and Europe.
In this context, TRAINMILE, your logistics operator, is commiated to the development of the Atlantic Corridor. It offers an efficient and sustainable freight transport service on this strategic route.
Burgos, a key city in the Atlantic corridor: its strategic potential for freight transport.
As a company based in Burgos, we are focused on the future of Burgos within the Atlantic Corridor and as a link between the Atlantic and Mediterranean Corridors, and we believe that there is great potential in a future standard gauge freight connection between the Jundiz terminal and Burgos.
To improve the efficiency of freight transport between the north of the peninsula and the capital, we would also like to see the reopening of the direct link between Burgos and Madrid. Although this is not yet on the drawing board, we believe it would be of great benefit to the region and the en1re Atlantic route.
European rail network challenges: Breaking down barriers to efficient and sustainable transport.
The European rail network faces complex challenges. These include different track gauges, power systems and train control systems in different countries. Converting to a single track gauge and unifying the safety system, such as the European Rail Control System (ETCS), is the long-term solution to these barriers.
Faced with these challenges, railways corridors become even more important. They play a key role in connecting the European continent in a more efficient and sustainable way.
